Dumb waiter is a fancy elevator of small size.  It is usually installed in the apartment building or a bungalow to transport food between the kitchen and living room or dining room if these are situated at different floors.  This can also be installed in restaurants, libraries, laboratories and offices where only small cargo is handled. The one shown in the picture is installed in different bungalows to lift food from the common kitchen to the kitchen in the living area.

The details are shown in the drawing.  There is the details of masonry shaft between different floors.  A view is shown which gives the fully assembled details then there are parts.  The cabin hangs with a wire rope and is balanced by the counter weight.  The whole system is manipulated by the wench which moves the cabin between the different floors. 

The cabin itself is a steel structure with in side lining in stainless steel.  The cabin has stainless steel vertically sliding door and its illumination which automatically operates when the lift is at the floor and ready to be operational.  The light comes on only when the door slides down.  

The vertical column is made up of steel shaft skeleton pieces and carries a hanger at the top with pulleys to accommodate the cabin and the counter weight.  Dumb-waiter has a capacity to carry a weight of about 100 Kg.  It has all the safeties usually available in the passenger lifts and is designed keeping in mind that it will be operated by the children, house maids and the house wives.  

Each floor has fancy panel door usually designed to go according to the decoration of the floor again with a vertically sliding door providing the necessary safety such that the lift will not operate if any of the doors is open.  The panel carries controls to send or call the lift and the indicators to show the position of the dumb-waiter.
